“Lighthouse” stands focus on the trade fair's core issues

WORLD OF ENERGY SOLUTIONS covers the entire value creation chain in the BATTERY+STORAGE exhibition area.

This year the BATTERY+STORAGE covers the entire battery production value added chain and focuses on module and pack assembly. The trade fair not only shows the individual process steps, but also the entire production environment including automation and Industry 4.0. "Lighthouse" exhibition stands  place the five core topics within an overall context while exhibitors present corresponding production solutions and detailed know-how.Visitors thus gain an overview and comprehensive information on the latest developments and innovations along the process chain.

Cell production: process requirements and key technologies

The expertise of German manufacturing and plant engineering is sought in various technology fields involved in the production of lithium-ion battery cells. The trade fair displays the entire cell production process: from electrode production and cell assembly to formation and inspection. As Professor Achim Kamker, PEM RWTH Aachen comments: "German manufacturing and plant engineering and the research community have launched a formidable drive to catch up in the area of cell production. Nowadays the entire production process can be mapped with a variety of different production technologies". The “lighthouse" exhibition stand “Cells” provides an overview of the individual steps and explores process requirements, quality characteristics and key technologies.

Automation/Industry 4.0: cost benefits and flexibility

Cell chemistries, cells, modules or packs: production solutions should work for all these sectors and then it is a matter of bringing the many individual process steps into line. „Standardized processes generate cost benefits. Yet at the same time flexibility is demanded. Industry 4.0 offers solutions for highly flexible mass production", is the view of Paul Merz, Area Sales Head Technology Solutions, KUKA Industries. Exhibitors at the trade fair show how this experience can be used for battery production and the benefit it generates.

Joining and bonding technology – the key process in module and pack assembly

From cell bonding and casing welding to assembling BMS(Battery Management System) components, cooling plates and sensors: as a key process joining and bonding technology is used everywhere. The Joining and Bonding Technology theme stand provides an overview of process steps and technologies. Marc Kirchhoff, Industry Management Automotive, Trumpf Laser- und Systemtechnik GmbH comments: "At the moment no technology stands out from the crowd. Every technology has its pros and cons. The main thing is that the technology satisfies the customer's needs and is adjusted to suit the relevant parameters."

Safety: fulfilling quality standards begins with the production process

Safety requirements for batteries are high – especially in the electric vehicle sector. "The more energy per volume in a battery, the more difficult it is to guarantee safety. High quality standards must already be met during the production process to exclude any risk of short circuits on the finished batteries", remarks Professor Werner Tillmetz, Head of Electrochemical Energy Technologies division at the Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Württemberg (ZSW). This core topic provides an overview of production's impact on battery safety and which tests the end-product must pass.

Measuring and test engineering: where is it necessary?

Measuring and test engineering must already be specifically applied during the production process to achieve the high quality standards demanded of batteries both in mobile and stationary implementation. On the one hand, to avoid high reject volumes, and on the other to comply with safety and performance standards. The “lighthouse” stand provides information about where measuring and test engineering is necessary in the production process and which electrical test procedures best characterize the finished product. According to Richard Moreth, Business Development Management at Vitronic: "Image processing systems could make a substantial contribution to safe processes and minimize reject volumes. Safe processes can prevent efficiency being compromised or, worst case, the explosion of a battery."
